Who can apply

Four categories of official partners

The programme is open to international institutions whose work intersects with Legionella prevention, water safety or waterborne disease surveillance. Credentials are publicly verifiable — no self-declarations.

ISO/IEC 17025-accredited testing laboratories

Microbiological water testing laboratories outside Italy holding accreditation under ISO/IEC 17025 (ILAC MRA signatory national body) for Legionella spp. culture methods. Eligible for data exchange, methodology cross-validation and joint publication.

Requirements

  • Valid ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation from an ILAC MRA-signatory body
  • Scope covering Legionella spp. detection in water matrices
  • Published accreditation certificate (publicly verifiable)

Academic departments & research institutions

University departments of public health, environmental microbiology, epidemiology and water safety engineering. CNR institutes, IRCCS and equivalent European research centres focused on Legionella, waterborne pathogens or healthcare-associated infections.

Requirements

  • Affiliation to an accredited university or public research institute
  • At least one published work on Legionella, waterborne pathogens or water safety
  • Verifiable institutional affiliation

Public health agencies & surveillance networks

European ECDC ELDSNet national nodes, national health institutes (equivalent of ISS), regional epidemiological surveillance units and WHO collaborating centres focused on Legionella or waterborne infectious diseases.

Requirements

  • Official institutional status (public body or equivalent)
  • Involvement in Legionella surveillance, reporting or outbreak investigation
  • Publicly verifiable institutional profile

International water safety & EHS consultancies

Water safety plan consultants, EHS management companies and technical advisory firms operating outside Italy who manage Italian facilities or work with clients requiring Italian Legionella compliance for their Italian assets.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience in Legionella risk assessment or water safety plans
  • Active projects or clients in Italy (or verifiable Italian facility portfolio)
  • Professional indemnity insurance and verifiable references
What partners receive

Six benefits of official partnership

Partnership is built on verifiable, reciprocal value — not vague promises. Each benefit is concrete and documented.

  • Dofollow citation in the Observatory

A permanent partner profile page at /en/partners/[slug] with a dofollow link to your institutional website, your logo, accreditation scope description and contact information — visible to all observatory users and indexed by search engines.

  • Acknowledgement in the annual report

The "State of Legionella Italy" annual report (published on Zenodo with a DOI, CC BY 4.0) cites all active partners in the Acknowledgements section and links to their public profiles. Citable in your own institutional publications.

  • Joint press releases

Significant observatory findings — annual report publication, notable dataset updates, regulatory milestones — are distributed to technical and public-health media across Europe. Active partners are cited as co-contributors where appropriate.

  • "Official Partner" badge

An HTML embed snippet and a downloadable badge ("Official Partner — Legionella Observatory Italy 2026") for your institutional website, with a reciprocal dofollow backlink to the observatory and a verifiable trust signal for your international clients.

  • Dataset access & methodology collaboration

Partner laboratories and academic institutions can request structured access to the full observatory dataset (beyond the public CC BY 4.0 download) and co-author methodology validation papers. Data-sharing agreements are governed by a simple MoU.

  • Priority press enquiry routing

Journalists, researchers and EHS teams contacting the observatory for expert commentary are routed to relevant partner profiles by sector and geography. Partners gain international visibility with an audience actively seeking Legionella expertise.

How to join

Four steps to official partnership

The entire process takes 7–10 business days and requires no fee at any stage.

  1. Submit your application

Send an email to the observatory with your institution name, type (laboratory, research, public health or consultancy), accreditation or affiliation details and a brief description of your Legionella-related work.

  2. Credential verification

We verify your institutional credentials — accreditation certificate, university affiliation or public-body status — within 5 business days. No fee is charged at any stage.

  3. Profile creation

We create your partner profile page (in English and Italian) with your institutional logo, accreditation scope, contact information and a dofollow link to your website.

  4. Badge and backlink

We send you the "Official Partner" badge embed code. You publish the badge on your institutional website with a dofollow link to the observatory. Partnership is confirmed once the backlink is live.

Academic & research collaboration

Open data, open citation, open methodology

The observatory dataset is released under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) and citable via a Zenodo DOI issued for each annual report. Our methodology aligns with ECDC ELDSNet protocol and UNI EN ISO 11731:2017 — making it suitable for cross-European epidemiological studies, PubMed submissions and ECDC technical reports.

Academic partners can request structured access to the full dataset, co-author methodology validation papers and participate in the annual report review process.

Common questions

Partner programme FAQ

Six answers on eligibility, benefits, the application process and what partnership means in practice.

Is there a membership fee?

No. The partnership programme is entirely free. We ask in return that you publish the official partner badge on your institutional website with a dofollow link to the observatory. This reciprocal link is the only condition for active partnership status.

Can a laboratory outside Italy join?

Yes. We actively seek international ISO/IEC 17025-accredited laboratories as partners — particularly those whose national accreditation body is a signatory of the ILAC Mutual Recognition Arrangement (ILAC MRA). International partners strengthen the observatory's credibility with European researchers and public-health agencies.

What does an academic partner gain specifically?

Academic partners are cited in the Acknowledgements section of the annual report (Zenodo DOI, CC BY 4.0), can request structured dataset access beyond the public download, and are referenced in press releases on major observatory findings. We are also open to co-authorship on methodology validation papers for journals such as the Journal of Water and Health, Water Research or Epidemiology & Infection.

How are public-health agencies involved?

Public health agency partners (ECDC ELDSNet nodes, national health institutes, regional surveillance units) can contribute aggregated surveillance data to the observatory dataset, co-author epidemiological summaries and be cited in press releases directed at European technical and public-health media.

How long does the application process take?

From application submission to confirmed partnership: typically 7–10 business days. This covers credential verification (5 days), profile creation (2 days) and backlink confirmation (1–3 days depending on your internal web team).

Can the partnership be terminated?

Yes. Either party can terminate at any time by written notification. Partner profiles are removed within 5 business days of termination. The annual report citation cannot be retroactively removed from published editions with a DOI, but new report editions will not include terminated partners.
