LEGIONELLA TESTING

SERVICES — ITALY

ISO/IEC 17025-compliant Legionella risk assessment, environmental sampling and compliance documentation across all 21 Italian regions — tailored to your facility type and regulatory obligations.

Sector-specific Legionella programmes

Each facility type carries a different risk profile, regulatory framework and water system layout. Select your sector to find the tailored compliance plan.

Hotels & B&Bs

High risk

Continuous guest occupancy, extended hot-water circuits and showers with high aerosol output create ideal Legionella amplification conditions. Semi-annual sampling with an annual risk-assessment update is the baseline protocol.

Nursing Homes & Care Facilities

High risk

Immunocompromised residents face the highest individual risk. Italian law and ECDC guidance require quarterly sampling and immediate corrective action above 100 CFU/L.

Scheda settore (IT) →

Residential Condominiums

Medium risk

Centralised storage tanks, recirculation loops and shared hot-water circuits with seasonal stagnation. Annual risk assessment with at least one sampling round per year is the standard protocol.

Gyms & Wellness Centres

High risk

Whirlpools, steam rooms, showers and heated pools generate continuous aerosol in confined spaces with high user turnover. High-frequency monitoring and real-time temperature logging are required.

Industrial Facilities

Medium risk

Cooling towers, industrial humidifiers and process-water circuits at manufacturing and pharmaceutical plants. Compliance with Legislative Decree 81/2008 on biological risk in workplaces.

Hospitals & Clinics

Specific risk

Surgical theatres, transplant wards and dialysis units require the most stringent Legionella control under Italian and EU law. Dedicated sampling plans and immediate reporting protocols.

Standard methodology

Five-step process — every engagement

Regardless of facility type or Italian region, every Legionella testing engagement follows the same documented five-step process aligned with UNI EN ISO 11731:2017.

  1. On-site technical survey

A qualified technician inspects the water system, maps all risk points (dead-legs, storage tanks, cooling towers) and drafts a sampling plan aligned with the Italian State-Regions Agreement 2015.

  2. Chain-of-custody sampling

Water samples are collected under a documented chain of custody using standardised aseptic procedures. Volumes, temperatures and locations are recorded in full.

  3. ACCREDIA-accredited laboratory analysis

Samples are analysed by an ACCREDIA-accredited partner laboratory using the UNI EN ISO 11731:2017 culture method — the Italian and EU reference standard for compliance-grade Legionella enumeration.

  4. Signed certified test report

The accredited laboratory issues a signed test report with quantitative results in CFU/L for each sample point, formatted for Italian health authority (ASL) audits.

  5. Operational report in English

We deliver a plain-language operational report interpreting results against ISS national risk thresholds, with a graded corrective-action plan and revised monitoring schedule — available in English for international head offices.

Common questions

Services FAQ

Five answers on legal obligations, laboratory standards, turnaround times and English documentation for international operators.

Which facility types are legally required to test for Legionella in Italy?

Under the Italian State-Regions Agreement of 7 May 2015 and Legislative Decree 81/2008, hotels, nursing homes, hospitals, gyms, public swimming pools and industrial facilities with cooling towers or aerosol-generating systems are subject to mandatory risk assessment and periodic sampling. Residential condominiums with centralised water systems are strongly recommended to sample annually.

What standard do your laboratories use?

All partner laboratories are accredited by ACCREDIA (the Italian National Accreditation Body, signatory of EA, IAF and ILAC mutual recognition arrangements) and analyse samples using the UNI EN ISO 11731:2017 culture method on BCYE selective agar at 36 °C for 7–10 days. Results are expressed in CFU/L and compared against ISS national action levels.

How quickly are results available?

Standard turnaround is 7–10 working days from the sampling date. Expedited analysis (3–5 working days) is available on request for pre-reopening protocols or post-incident investigations. The certified test report is issued directly by the accredited laboratory and forwarded to you digitally.

Do you provide documentation in English for head-office audits?

Yes. All operational reports, risk summaries and compliance dashboards are available in English. Certified laboratory test reports are issued in Italian (the legally required format for Italian health authority inspections) but accompanied by an English summary note.

Can you service multiple Italian properties under one contract?

Yes. Framework contracts for international hotel chains and multi-site operators are our speciality. A single contract covers all scheduled sampling rounds across all Italian properties, with a unified annual sampling calendar, consolidated English reporting and priority scheduling. Volume pricing applies from three or more sites.
